Irish Penal Rosary Parts
Historians call the years 1540-1731, in Ireland’s history, the “Penal Times”. In their effort to Anglicize the Irish people, the English passed a series of laws (called the "Penal Laws") that made it illegal to teach or practice the Catholic faith. Religious objects were also forbidden and this simple single decade rosary came into use because it could be easily hidden inside the sleeve or palm. The Penal Rosary was said by placing the ring over the thumb for the first decade and then over the index finger for the second, and so on. |
